This weeks prompt: Story

"Character consists of what you do on the third and fourth tries."
-James A. Michener

Two years ago Gypsy asked me to read her a book but I didn't feel like reading that night. I told her, "No. Not right now. I know I'm a bad mom but I just don't want to read tonight." She replied, "No. You're not a bad mom. You're a nice mom." "Oh thank you," I said. "What makes me a nice mom?" She said, "Cause you scare my hiccups, and you just talk, and you give children snacks {pause} and you read books. Can you read this book?"

She is uber tenacious. This is a characteristic that is desired in adults but in children is frowned upon. Well, when they are persistent in misbehavior or pesky requests it is frowned upon. There are days when I want my no to be no and to have her acceptance for my answer. Those days do not come often. I battle with keeping her tenacity strong while nurturing her obedience. As parents how are we to achieve this balance? I pray Brad and I can manage this task.

Andi and Brad have been married since 2002. They have five squishers who keep them on their toes. She is a second generation home educator. In her spare time Andi creates and sells handmade goodies in her shop, Andi Gould Designs.

  1. Visiting from Lisa-Jo's. Love the story. Kids come out with such intelligent perceptive comments don't they. My friend's 2.5 year old recently said, " Daddy, can you go upstairs, then I can be naughty, you can come back and find me, and then I'll go sit on the naughty step". Amazing how she had it all worked out. No idea how parents deal with it...but as an 'Aunty' not a mum it makes me love kids even more!!
