The Woes of Monster

In June Monster turned 2! He is a bundle of energy, bringing laughter to our family. When I took him to our pediatrician for his 2 year check up I asked about his soft spot. It is still open and quite large I thought. After checking him over she agreed with me that it is still large. The soft spot on top of a child's head usually closes around 18 months of age. She was also concerned that he has only grown 1 inch in the past year. I knew he was on the smaller size but after she said this I realized he is still wearing the same clothes he wore last year. The combination of these two slowed growth developments had her thinking his thyroid may be the culprit. He also had a heart murmur she had never heard before.

We had some blood tests done and they came back normal. Praise God! We went to a cardiologist and he said only about 15% of heart murmurs are anything to be concerned about and Monster's is not one of those. He should out grow this one. Praise God again!

We went back to the pediatrician last week and his head has not grown at all in the past two months but the soft spot is still the same. I talked with her about him falling a lot lately. At first it was falling off his chair at the dinner table. Well he is 2 and refuses to use a booster seat and likes to wiggle, what else is going to happen?! But he also has been falling while just walking or running. And he fell down the stairs a few days before his appointment. He has never fallen down the stairs before, fortunately he was fine and more concerned that he dropped Bullseye. All these falls could be due to a growth spurt, except he isn't really growing very much. The doctor wants to be sure there is nothing to be concerned about so September 8th we are going in for an MRI and some more blood work.

Most days I'm fine and don't really think anything about all of this, other days it is very hard to think something could be wrong with my little Shnuggle Mouse. We are praying everything shows that he is a health boy who is just slower to grow. Hopefully the next two weeks will not be filled with much anxiety. I'm also praying he won't be too hungry that morning since he can't eat until after the MRI.

  1. Andi, your little Shnuggle Mouse IS healthy in Jesus' name, I claim it right now! Praying that all goes well on Sept. 8th and that he gets the best doctors and nurses with great attitudes to ease everyone's nerves that day. Love you all so much!
