School Started!

Long before B and I were even married I knew I wanted to homeschool my children. When he and I met and this came up in conversation (fairly early in our relationship if I remember correctly) he was on board. He is so great like that, he is on board with most of my crazy ideas and when he isn't on board I realize I need to get on a different train!

Now that I have children I am so geeked about teaching them. A few months ago I was looking through a teacher book and told B it was the first time in over a year of not working that I missed teaching. I knew I didn't want to go back to work and teach other people's kids, I knew I was just excited about teaching our kids.

So all summer I have been kinda planning this year. The last school I taught at was by far the best teaching experience I had and I know it will influence a lot of my teaching in the preschool years. The school started at age 2 1/2, which is where Little Bo Peep is right now. I did not teach her age at that school but I was in that classroom enough to know some of those activities and how I would tone down the pre-Kindergarten activities I did teach. I also taught her age at two different schools for a total of 2 1/2 years with that age. I am not worried about this year at all. And maybe that was my problem this summer.

All summer I kept putting planning off. I would think about it for a few minutes and get an idea or two and that would be it. So a few weeks ago I realized, "Oh my gosh, 'school' is starting in a few weeks, what have I been doing????"

After my post the other day about the homeschool giveaway I have been looking at some different sites and getting more serious about school starting in our home.

My new obsession: lapbooks!

I took the girls to buy some file folders this morning. On our way home I passed a neighbor and her daughter getting out of the car. The little girl was wearing her "first day of school" dress and her "bigger than myself" pink backpack. I thought, "She just started school today and so are we!"

So this afternoon Little Bo Peep and I officially started school!

We are learning about Little Bo Peep! Senses, parts of the body, etc.

Today she learned where her ankles are and that her "tummy" is also called a stomach.

We started our first lapbook.

When I gave her the picture of the boy (the beautiful masterpiece right in the middle of her lapbook) she started coloring him purple. I looked up a moment later and saw his shirt and shorts were purple. I went back to what I was doing. Then I looked again and saw that all of him was purple. I told myself it is okay, it is her lapbook, it is her schoolwork and went back to what I was doing. I looked again and saw that the paper was about to be purple. So I encouraged her to use a different marker.

Me: "Little Bo Peep why don't you use a different color."
Little Bo Peep: "No, Mumma. Purple is my favorite color."

NEWSFLASH: PURPLE IS NOW LITTLE BO PEEP'S FAVORITE COLOR

The girl has loved blue since she started playing with toys. The past few months she has been adding colors to her list of favorites but blue is always added. Two days ago she informed me that pink was her favorite color. I asked her about blue and she said, "No, pink is my favorite." I love how God created women to be so fickle impulsive well you get the point!

We still have some more work to do this week on our lapbook. We will be making a picture list of quiet and loud noise, a matching game of items to our senses, plus a few more items I'm excited about.

We showed B the lapbook during dinner. Then she proceeded to tell Goldilocks where her "Er Ank" was. It took me a minute to figure out she was telling Goldilocks about her OTHER ANKLE!

She learned something!!!

After diner I wanted to work a bit more. So I asked Little Bo Peep to bring me her lapbook. She stopped what she was doing and ran to get it then called to me, "Here it is Mumma. Here." She was so proud to have that ownership over her work, her school work.

Even without an official Lesson Plan, we still started school and we both had fun!

I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT SCHOOL! I never thought those words would really come out of my mouth.

Andi and Brad have been married since 2002. They have five squishers who keep them on their toes. She is a second generation home educator. In her spare time Andi creates and sells handmade goodies in her shop, Andi Gould Designs.
